LOUISVILLE, Ky.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Jan. 15, 2019-- Humana Inc. (NYSE: HUM), one of the nation’s leading health and well-being companies, announced today the appointment of William Shrank, MD, MSHS, as Humana’s new Chief Medical Officer, effective April 1. He will serve as a member of the Humana Management Team and report to Humana President and CEO Bruce D. Broussard.

Dr. Shrank will succeed Roy A. Beveridge, MD, who last year announced that he would retire from Humana in the course of 2019. Dr. Beveridge has played a critical role over the past five and a half years in advancing the company’s clinical strategy; ameliorating social determinants of health for Humana members; and leading the company’s Bold Goal initiative. To ensure a smooth transition, Dr. Beveridge will remain with Humana for several months after Dr. Shrank joins the firm.

As Chief Medical Officer, Dr. Shrank will play an important leadership role in implementing the company’s integrated care delivery strategy. This strategy emphasizes a consumer-friendly, evidence-based, technology-enabled approach to personalized health improvement for the company’s over 16 million Humana health plan members.

“We’re excited to have Dr. Shrank join our team as he brings a wide range of healthcare experiences to Humana, all of which are complementary to our strategy,” said Broussard. “Dr. Shrank’s background as a practicing physician, along with his experience in integrated health systems, retail, government and academia makes him the ideal addition to our team. His expertise in value-based reimbursement and clinical outcomes for chronic conditions is especially important as we advance our integrated care strategy.”

Dr. Shrank joins Humana from the University of Pittsburgh Medical Center (UPMC), where he served since 2016 as Chief Medical Officer, Insurance Services Division. At UPMC, Dr. Shrank oversaw approximately $9 billion in annual health care expenditures for approximately 3.5 million members in Medicare, Medicaid, behavioral health, Managed Long Term Social Supports and commercial lines of business. He also developed and evaluated population health programs to further advance the medical center’s mission as an integrated delivery and financing system.

From 2013 to 2016, Dr. Shrank was Senior Vice President, Chief Scientific Officer, and Chief Medical Officer of Provider Innovation at CVS Health. From 2011 to 2013, Dr. Shrank served as Director, Research and Rapid-Cycle Evaluation Group, for the Center for Medicare and Medicaid Innovation, part of the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS), where he led the evaluation of all payment and health system delivery reform programs and developed the rapid-cycle strategy to promote continuous quality improvement.

Dr. Shrank began his career as a practicing physician with Brigham and Women’s Hospital in Boston and an Assistant Professor at Harvard Medical School. His research at Harvard focused on improving the quality of prescribing and the use of chronic medications. He has published more than 200 papers on these topics.

Dr. Shrank received his M.D. from Cornell University Medical College. He completed his residency in internal medicine at Georgetown University and his fellowship in Health Policy Research at the University of California, Los Angeles. He also earned a Master of Science degree in health services from the University of California, Los Angeles and a bachelor's degree from Brown University.
